Angelique sighed as she looked out of her hotel window. The glittering New York skyline did nothing to alleviate her sour mood. She was in trouble. Her attempts to garner information from her companion Gustav Reuter has been about as successful as getting that grim Russian Kuryakin to like her, not that she had any desire to have that horrible little man like her. Reuter insisted that ending U.N.C.L.E. was his professional goal but the destruction of her Napoleon was his personal goal. He seemed more intent on his personal goal, a fact that quite frankly did not set well with her.
Angelique had not lasted this long in THRUSH without taking calculated risks and she was sure that the idea she was formulating would be one of the more dangerous ones she had contemplated to date. Listening at the door connecting her suite to Rueter's she could hear the sound of the shower. Hoping Rueter was occupied she grabbed her fur coat and quickly left her room and took the stairs down to the lobby.
As her taxi pulled up to the Del Floria's entrance to U.N.C.L.E. headquarters Angelique noticed two things, one there was an unexpected closed sign on the shop and two she saw Agent Dancer standing in a corner phone booth talking into her communicator. Dancer exited the phone booth and hailed a cab rather than enter through the agent's entrance. Something was obviously not right. Angelique decided she would follow the young agent.
April noticed the taxi that had stopped near De Floria's pulled out into traffic and follow hers. A few blocks later she handed the driver her fare, "Darling, be a love and make a quick right and just slow down then continue on to where ever you want to go."
"Sure lady, it's your money!" The cab took a sharp right and April jumped out and quickly slid between two parked cars, crouching down waiting for the cab that was tailing her. The cab pulled around the corner and April, special in hand, ran out. Grabbing the taxi door she yanked it open and threw herself inside right on top of Angelique.
April pushed Angelique hard, shoving her special into the THRUSH agents side.
Angelique pulled away and straightened her dress, and coat. "Not the most elegant of entrances dear, but well done!".
"Why are you following me? Do you have something to do with all this?" April could only think of Mark and what might be happening to him.
Angelique raised her hands and smiled. "Yes and no to your second question, as to the first question I have come to offer my services."
"I bet you just did!" April scoffed.
"So untrusting, and at such a young age. Just give Napoleon a call and tell him I didn't know anything about the phone, but I have some information on who does, and I want to help".
Keeping her special on Angelique, April pulled her communicator out with her left hand to make her call.
At the Hartford field station Napoleon and Illya waited at the entrance for April and her surprise companion. Illya was not happy, whenever Angelique was involved his partner seemed to lose what common sense he had and trouble soon followed. The trouble that followed usually meant he would get shot, hung up or tortured. Napoleon was pacing, fidgeting and seemed as unnerved as a bridegroom waiting for his intended. Illya grimaced at that mental picture. "Napoleon, please relax, stop pacing!" he growled.
"At lease I don't look like I ate a lemon!"
"Eating a truckload of lemons would be preferable to dealing with that woman."
The door swung open and Angelique entered with April and her special close behind.
Angelique smiled. Wrapping her arms around Napoleon's neck she greeted him with a passionate kiss. "Hello Napoleon, I've come to offer my services to you and U.N.C.L.E."
Napoleon held her at arms length. "Angelique my love, you have a lot of explaining to do!" Illya glared at them both and snorted "Really Napoleon, she has "explaining" to do?" Rolling his eyes Illya pointed down a hallway "Miss La Chien we have an interrogation room waiting for you."
"But of course." Linking her arm through Napoleon's she headed in the direction indicated, Illya and April close behind.
Later that evening the three agents sat in a conference room finalizing a plan. "Ok" Napoleon said "We know that THRUSH had Angeliqe return a stolen U.N.C.L.E. prototype that had been tampered with. The phone when examined was triggered to emit some sort of electronic wave that had put everyone within it's range to sleep or changed their normal behavior"
Illya continued "We know it has limited range but we can't get to the device to disable it in any way. Plus we don't know if it CAN be disabled".
"The THRUSH mastermind behind this is someone named Gustav Reuter who seems to have a personal grudge against me." Napoleon added.
"Do you recognize his name or the description Angelique provided?" April asked.
"Not at all." Napoleon looked at the other two agents. "Reuter is the only one who knows what the beam is, and it only makes sense that he'd have a way to get past it."
Illya shook his head "I don't like it, there has to be another way."
"There may be partner but we really don't have a lot of time to try and figure it out. I trust the two of you to cover me. I'll have Angelique turn me over to Reuter and we'll take it from there."
"What if you get the only THRUSH who doesn't want to brag and explain his master plan boss." April asked "What if he just kills you?"
"Well, then it's up to you and Illya."
"Not good enough my friend. Plus I don't trust that woman, how do we know she'll do what she says she will?"
"Do you have a better idea Illya?"
Illya and April waited with Napoleon as the Hartford medic inserted a small tracking device under his skin. "April and I will be monitoring you from the street, outside the hotel." Illya said. "We'll be in contact with the strike team we've put together, they will be staged near Headquarters."
"All you have to do is stay alive." April added. "Angelique indicated that she'll get Reuter to talk about the device."
Illya indicated the tracker, "When you want us to move in is scratch your neck and press on the tracker. It will send a signal."
"I guess we are ready then" Napoleon said. "Let's get Angelique and get going."
The three agents and Angelique left the Hartfort field station. Illya grabbed Angelique's arm to help her into the van they were taking. "If Napoleon is injured or dies, I will kill you." he whispered. Angelique started to make a flippant remark but her words failed her as she looked into his cold eyes. She swallowed and nodded.
Gustav Reuter was furious. Angelique La Chien was a dead woman. He didn't care what support she had at Central. When he had checked in her adjoining room to discover she was missing he was livid. His usual cold calm was abandoned as he raged and broke every object he could in her room. Each object that cracked and shattered was in his mind her face, arms and legs and then Napoleon Solo's face, arms, legs and back. Finally finished he calmly surveyed his destruction and smiled. He had discovered long ago that judiciously applied rage helped keep his demons in check. He just had to be sure to let them out to play once in a while, of course he felt so much better when he applied his rage to people not unfeeling objects. He heard a key in turn in the lock.
Angelique entered. She had her hand on the arm of a blindfolded and bound man, her pistol pressed to his back. Looking at the destruction of what had been her room she raised her eyebrow at Reuter. "Problems with housekeeping?"
Reuter pointed his own pistol at Angelique. "I'm giving you ten seconds to convince me why I shouldn't kill you."
Angelique turned and pulled the blindfold off of Napoleon who stood and blinked in the sudden light.
"Solo" Reuter whispered. He raised his pistol and pulled the trigger.
